Big thanks to our Indian Railways, for creating the biggest railways network in the world across 1, 23,236 km. Another interesting point to know – Mumbai’s local train network is the oldest railway network in Asia. It is the lifeline for millions of people in Mumbai. On April 16th, 1853, the first train took off from Bori Bunder (present-day Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus) for Thane covering a distance of 34 K.M in an hour & 15 minutes. Indian railways have grown so huge, that is the example we can see in Mumbai, as today Western, Central, Harbour and Trans-Harbour line catering to more than seven-and-a-half million commuters daily. 2,342 train services running every day from 4 am to 1 am – and beyond. Mumbai’s suburban train network is known as one of the busiest train systems in the world. Also, Mumbai has the first AC local train running across Mumbai. It started its operation in December 2017 and 5 months crossed the 10 lakh passenger mark. It is seen in summer months March and April over 3 lakh passengers take the AC locals for traveling. Yes, Mumbai stands on the foundation of its suburban railway network, which cripples the city if it crumbles for even a couple of hours. When Mumbai locals run smoothly, people scamper from one point to another covering a large distance. Local trains are for traveling long distances in short times at an affordable cost, albeit under congested, inhuman conditions.
