Mughalsarai is an ancient and renowned city of Uttar Pradesh. The city is named so as it housed the inn where the travelers going East on the Grand Trunk Road rested for the night during the Mughal era. The city is known to house various sacred places as well as some of the best tourist spots in India. Mughlasarai is one of the oldest railway stations in India and was established when the East India railway Company commenced the first rail route between Howrah and Delhi. The junction, which was electrified between 1961 and 1965, has today become the forth busiest railway station in India.
