The city is famous for its leather industry and is also one of the most important commercial and industrial centers of India. The city was previously known by the name of Cawnpore and was established in the form a village in 1207 by Raja Kanh Deo. The city was one of the battle centers in the revolution of 1857, the first struggle for India’s independence. There are several places of tourist interest in the city including Phool Bagh, Allen Forest Zoo, Ganga Barrage, Dwarkadhish Temple, Jain Glass Temple and Massacre Ghat etc.

The Kanpur Central railway station is amongst the only five central railway stations in India. The station handles traffic of more than 280 trains per day making it one of the busiest of North Central Railway Zone. This is really not surprising given the fact that Kanpur is the second largest industrial city in India besides being the 10th most populous urban center of the country.  In fact, it is also one of the preferred destinations for delivery of food for train for countless passengers travelling on the Howrah- Delhi route.
