The city is famous for its leather industry and is also one of the most important commercial and industrial centers of India. The city was previously known by the name of Cawnpore and was established in the form a village in 1207 by Raja Kanh Deo. The city was one of the battle centers in the revolution of 1857, the first struggle for India’s independence.
