I was born in a Punjabi family settled in Mumbai and never got the opportunity to travel to Punjab. However, having heard much about the state and its culture since I was I child, I cherished the dream of visiting it at some point of time. So when the opportunity presented itself in the form of my best friend Richa’s marriage in Jalandhar, I simply packed my bags and prayed for for a great holiday.

We reached Jalandhar Cantt station, which presents an old world charm with its unique structure. It laid a great first impression on me for a city which is amongst the oldest cities in India.  My other friends were amazed by the great hospitality and warm hearted welcome we received upon reaching Richa’s home.

Since the wedding events were beginning the same night, we did not get much time to explore the city on that day. In fact, the next three days were spent attending the various ceremonies of the wedding and doing last minute wedding shopping with Richa and her cousins. It was during these small trips that we got a glimpse of the city which seemed to be extremely well laid out and beautiful.

From the fourth day onwards we started our exploration of the city with a visit to the famous Devi Talab Mandir, which is basically a conglomeration of various temples with the main one, located in the middle of a pond. We also visited the equally famous St. Mary Cathedral Church. The fifth day was spent enjoying a trip to the Pushpa Gujral Science City, which is located at some distance from the city.

In the evening Richa’s parents took us along with the newlywed couple to enjoy traditional Punjabi dinner at the Rangla Punjab Haveli located on the outskirts of Jalandar. Here we not only enjoyed great food but also witnessed some popular folk dance and music performances. The next day we returned to Mumbai in the afternoon and availed the facility of delivery of foods in train, to enjoy the great taste a bit more. Overall this small trip proved to be extremely enjoyable and memorable for me.
