Ujjain is an ancient city located on the eastern banks of River Kshirpa in Madhya Pradesh<\/span><\/h2>\n

The Vedas and Puranas describe Ujjain using different names including Avanti, Avantika, Indrapuri, Padmavati and Amravati. The city gets its name Avanti, after the daughter of King Kartavirya Arjun, Avanti \u2013 the name that has been found repeatedly in the Veda verses. The ancient city is linked to a number of mythological tales and has been the place where Poet Kalidas wrote his verses and is famous for being ruled by King Asoka the great and Vikramaditya.<\/p>\n

Considered one of the seven holy cities of the Hindus, Ujjain is called the land of Lord Shiva and houses the most renowned Mahakaleshwar Temple, one of the 12 Jyothirlingas in India.<\/p>\n

Being an ancient city, the city is famous for a number of other ancient temples and monuments renowned for their magnificent architecture. Sanskrit, the Indian classical language is taught at Kalidas Academy in Ujjain. The city is also famous for its ethnic handmade tribal jewelry and textiles, and bamboo products that make for an excellent souvenir. The weather in Ujjain is extreme with hot summers and cold winters.<\/p>\n

Ujjain junction, located 12 Km to the east of Ujjain is the main railway station of the city and is connected to major important cities in India through a vast railway network. Vikramnagar, Matana Buzurg, Pingleshwar and Chintaman are the other stations in the city. Formerly known as Avantikapuri, the Ujjain junction was electrified in the year 1992.<\/p>\n
